Will US citizens need visa for Europe in 2021? What countries will require a visa in 2021?

European Parliament and the Council adopted on September 12, 2018 – The Regulation (EU) 2018/1240 establishing a European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

In order to comply with the new Regulation, travellers from 62 countries (including USA, Israel, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zeeland, Japan, Brazil) visiting Europe from January 2021 will be required to obtain an approved ETIAS online prior to their departure.

U.S. citizens traveling to Europe will shortly need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) visa waiver which is the new travel authorization for Europe that will come into effect early in 2021.

In order to obtain the authorization for traveling in the Schengen Area, the applicants will have to pay 7 Euro and to complete the online application. The online form will require you to provide some personal data, including name, date and place of birth, sex and nationality, information on travel documents (validity and country of issue), residential address and contact information, and the European country where the first entry is expected. It will include questions related to previous criminal records and presence in conflict zones.

There will also be some security and health-related questions. All the information provided will be checked with numerous EU data system including Europol and Interpol.

The application process will take a matter of minutes and, if approved, the ETIAS travel authorization will be send to the applicant electronically. Travelers will then be able to enter any of the Schengen countries by presenting their ETIAS document along with their passport.
