Eligibility

Legislation on Romanian citizenship is based on the right of blood (ius sanguinis). This means that a child of a Romanian citizen legally acquires Romanian citizenship. The country of birth is not important. Thus, many people who are descendants of Romanian immigrants and today living in many countries in the world have the right to Romanian citizenship and a Romanian European passport.

Importance of Romanian Documents

If you do not posses relevant Romanian documents proving your ancestors’ Romanian citizenship, the first thing to do is to run archival search in Romania (or in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova, Serbia). Without proper Romanian documents, it is not possible to apply for the confirmation of Romanian citizenship. If you do possess some Romanian documents.
